Electric Car Racing Tournament Returns To Brooklyn This Weekend

BROOKLYN, NY — The Brooklyn waterfront will transform into an international race track this weekend.

Formula E New York City E-Prix, a single-seat electric car racing tournament, is returning to the streets of Red Hook for the fifth time Saturday and Sunday.

Officially known as the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship, the two-day, zero emissions racing event took a year off during the pandemic, but was back in Brooklyn as of last summer.

Save from the pandemic pause, the event has been holding its final round of races in the borough since 2017 (following stints in farther-off cities like Monaco and Paris), with cars zipping through the streets at over 100 miles per hour.

Whether you want to watch the race or avoid the slew of street closures it will bring (starting Wednesday), here’s everything you need to know about the 2022 Formula E New York City E-Prix.

When and where will the racing event happen?

The racers will set up at the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal for a double header on July 16 and 17, according to the event schedule (which includes a map). The first qualifying round kicks off bright and early at 8:40 am Saturday. Get the full schedule here.

How do I get tickets and how much do they cost?

Tickets start at $15 per-person for entry to the Allianz E-Village, which includes space to try out the newest electric innovations and access to the trackside viewing area (kids can go in for free). To watch from the grandstands, and see the course plus the Statue of Liberty and the Manhattan skyline, tickets will set you back at least $95 apiece. Get ticket details here.
