Electric cars are rapidly taking over the auto industry and with the various infrastructure necessities being satisfied, they will continue to influence every sector of the automotive world. One such electric vehicle making waves is the Ford Mustang Mach-E.
The Mustang Mach-E – despite its unsuitable name – is a pretty good electric car. The styling is great, the practicality is good enough for families, and the pricing is competitive within its segment. The base Mach-E officially offers around 230 miles of range, thanks to a single 260 hp motor and a 68 kWh battery. The dual-motor version produced the same power, but more than 100 lb-ft more, resulting in 428 lb.ft. The Extended Range version has a larger 88 kWh battery, boosting range and power to 300 miles and 290 hp respectively. Ford also released a top-of-the-line Mach-E GT version, which produces 480 hp and 600 lb-ft, but drops official range to just 270 miles.
The Mustang Mach-E turned out to be better than most reviewers believed it would be, even winning the 2021 North American SUV of the Year award. But while the Mach-E impresses, there are alternatives in this price range – some even slightly cheaper – both electric and electrically-assisted. Here are five electric vehicles and five hybrids to buy instead of the Ford Mustang Mach-E.
10 Electric – Tesla Model Y
The Tesla Model Y is one of the best electric crossover-SUVs on sale. Based on the same platform as the Model 3, the Model Y is slightly larger and more spacious. The Model Y is fitted as standard with a 75 kWh battery, mated to two electric motors which provide permanent all-wheel-drive.
The Model Y is available in two trim levels, Long Range AWD and Performance. The Long Range model provides around 330 miles of range, while the Performance variant drops to 303 miles. The Model Y Performance rockets to 60 mph in just 3.5 seconds and is the Ford Mustang Mach-E’s biggest rival.
9 Hybrid – Lexus UX
Lexus has recently updated the UX’s line-up to only include hybrid models, specifically the UX 250h. The vehicle is powered by a 2.0-liter naturally aspirated inline-4, mated to an electric motor, which produces a combined output of 181 hp.
The UX 250h has a 1.4 kWh battery and is capable of charging at 6.6kW charging stations. The Lexus UX may not be the fastest hybrid vehicle out there, but it is definitely one of the best-looking and most comfortable.
8 Electric – Volvo C40 Recharge Electric
Volvo has recently updated most of its vehicles and added a fully electric version of the XC40 to their line-up. Volvo renamed the model the XC40 Recharge Electric and added a coupe-version of the vehicle, which they named the C40 Recharge.
The C40 is based on the same platform as the XC40 – and the Polestar 2 – and is the first Volvo model to be entirely electric. It is fitted with a 78 kWh battery, mated to two electric motors, which combined provide all-wheel-drive and 400 hp. The C40 has an official range of around 220 miles.
7 Hybrid – Kia Sportage
The Kia Sportage has recently been updated with a brand-new model with much more striking styling – much the same as with the new Hyundai Tucson, with which the Sportage shares a platform. The Sportage is available in multiple different configurations, from a naturally aspirated 2.0-liter i4 and turbocharged 1.6-liter i4, to a gasoline mild hybrid, a plug-in hybrid, a turbo diesel and even a hybrid turbo diesel.
The North American versions are exclusively the long-wheelbase models and can be fitted with either a 187 hp 2.5-liter 4-cylinder, or the aforementioned hybrid, which is fitted with the 1.6-liter turbocharged i4. The Sportage’s styling may be controversial to some, but it continues to be a good-value-for-money vehicle.
6 Electric – VW ID.4
The VW ID.4 is the electric equivalent to the Tiguan crossover/SUV, but with weirder styling. The model has two different battery capacities, namely a 55 and 82 kWh, which has various outputs depending on the trim and number of motors.
Power figures of the ID.4 range from 148 hp and rises all the way to 295 hp in the all-wheel-drive GTX model. The mid-range ID.4 Pro gets the best battery to power ratio, resulting in an official range of more than 320 miles.
5 Hybrid – Honda CR-V
The Honda CR-V has been one of the best and most consistent SUVs on the market since it was launched in 1995. The current generation Honda CR-V received a facelift in 2019, along with some new drivetrain options, including a hybrid.
The CR-V comes standard with front-wheel-drive, however each trim has the option of all-wheel-drive. The hybrid is fitted with a 2.0-liter naturally aspirated inline-4 and an electric motor, which combined produces 212 hp. The hybrid model is fitted with an eCVT to manage the two outputs smoothly.
4 Electric – Kia Niro EV
The Kia Niro was only launched in 2016, but it already has a bunch of accolades to put on its dashboard. The Niro Hybrid set the record for the most fuel-efficient hybrid in 2016 and the Niro EV was the first electric car to win both What Car‘s and Popular Mechanics’ Car of the Year awards.
The second-generation Niro was released in 2021 and is only available as either a hybrid, plug-in hybrid or fully electric. The Niro EV features a single 200 hp electric motor, mated to a 64.8 kWh battery, which is good for 240 miles.
3 Hybrid – Toyota RAV4 Hybrid
The Toyota RAV4 is currently one of the most popular crossover/SUVs on the market in any territory and as such, Toyota has made some changes. The range is available with normal gasoline engines, but the top-of-the-range model has a naturally aspirated inline-4, mated to an electric motor.
The resulting hybrid produces 220 hp. Like most Toyota hybrid products, the RAV4 Hybrid has a Prime version, which changes the drivetrain to a plug-in hybrid and adds performance, resulting in 302 hp. If the styling of the RAV4 doesn’t desire, the legendary Japanese coachbuilder, Mitsouka Motors, offers a body kit which turns the RAV4 into a modern take on the Chevy K5 Blazer. The Mitsouka Buddy may be a bit of a hit-and-miss, but is cool nonetheless.
2 Electric – Hyundai Ioniq 5
One of the best and most talked about electric cars is the Hyundai Ioniq 5. First shown as a concept car and then a full production version with minimal changes, the Ioniq 5 is the first car which showed that automotive styling of the future needn’t be boring.
The Ioniq 5 is available with two different batteries and can be ordered in either rear-wheel-drive or all-wheel-drive and supports charging of up to 350 kW. The Long-Range and Extra-Long-Range versions both have official ranges of above 300 miles, making them pretty good electric cars.
1 Hybrid – Toyota Camry Hybrid
The Toyota Camry Hybrid may be a bit of a left-field alternative to the Ford Mustang Mach-E, but it is one of the most popular hybrid vehicles on sale. Fitted with a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder and an electric motor, the Camry Hybrid produces 208 hp going to the front wheels only via a CVT which can simulate physical gears.
The Camry has always been a pretty boring, but practical and efficient vehicle, but luckily Toyota decided to spice up the range – and most other models – with better equipment and more fun-orientated options. The Camry is even available with a TRD body kit, which adds a spoiler on the trunk. So, while the Mustang Mach-E may be a pretty good electric car, the Toyota Camry is one of the very best hybrids out there.
